Piloting is the first of the United States Power Squadrons' courses on navigation. It focuses on navigation as done on recreational boats today and uses GPS as a primary tool while including traditional techniques so the student will be able to find his/her way even if the GPS fails. It includes many in-class exercises, developing skills through hands-on practice. Topics include: charts and their interpretation, navigation aids, plotting courses and determining direction and distance, the mariner's compass, use of GPS, pre-planning safe courses and entering them into the GPS, determining position by both GPS and traditional techniques such as bearings and dead reckoning, the "Seaman's Eye" - simple skills for checking that one is on course. Instruction is highly inter-active and customized for each student.

The safety and comfort of those who venture out on the water have always been weather dependent. In this course students will become keener observers of the weather, but weather observations only have meaning in the context of the basic principles of meterology - the science of the atmosphere. We focus on how weather systems form, behave, move, and interact with one another and gives the availability of all sorts of weather reports and forecasts on the internet. Boaters and non-boaters alike will benefit from delving into this fascinating subject.
